LPS Extraction

Endotoxins, also known as lipopolysaccharides (LPS), are major components of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. In addition to serving as a barrier to the environment and various toxic substances such as antibiotics, the outer membrane can also act as a nutrient transporter. LPS constitutes about 3.6% of the entire bacterial cell, covering almost three-quarters of the surface area of the outer membrane of E. coli. Typically, the term LPS refers to the purified form, while endotoxin refers to LPS attached on the bacterial membrane. Released from surfaces during bacterial growth, cell division, and lysis, LPS are toxic inflammatory factors ubiquitous in the environment that affect many cellular and humoral-mediated systems. Studies have found that endotoxins can also augment the toxicity of some chemicals, such as microcystins. Currently, endotoxins have been considered to be one of the main causes of pyrogenic reactions during biotherapeutics administration.

Due to the influence of LSP, there are more and more studies on it. The identification and characterization of intact LPSs are challenging areas of ​​research, and there is an even greater need for sensitive, reproducible, and reliable LPS extraction methods to support them.
