Endotoxins act on phagocytes, neutrophils, endothelial cells, platelets, the complement system and the coagulation system, histamine and kallikrein, and other biologically active substances can cause insufficient capillary perfusion of tissues and organs, resulting in hypoxia and acidosis. High concentrations of endotoxin can also activate alternative complement pathways, trigger high fever, low blood pressure and activate the coagulation system, leading to disseminated intravascular coagulation. Therefore, endotoxin must be detected and removed from the dialysate.
